All of us in the middle, with a chasm between.

All of us in the middle, with a chasm between.

We’re now in the middle of our move. Half of us are here in Southern California and half of us are still back in Michigan. The half of us living in LA is hanging out in a Residence Inn and managing lots of new-life, people who don’t know us, or no people at all. The two of us still in Michigan are dealing with packing and wrapping up and really hard hours of saying stretched-out good-byes. Somehow we all wish we were on the other side; the other side of this really hard transition. Leaving worlds we enjoyed, learning to leap, reaching out, and trying out for teams. One day we’re discouraged and the next, we’re pointed toward hope and amazing joy.  In all the trying outs there have been great discoveries and there have also been jabs of disappointment. We...

Avatars, Voices and Jesus.

Avatars, Voices and Jesus.

Last week on NPR I heard a fascinating interview with a psychiatrist who uses avatar therapy to quiet the negative voices in people’s minds and free them from the burdens imposed by fear, doubt, anxiety, insecurity (etc.). I’ve since read that this sort of therapy is even used to treat clinical schizophrenia. Fascinating, isn’t it? Talk about theater of the mind!! Apparently this avatar therapy challenges the patient to describe in physical detail the way this personified voice looks, sounds, and behaves. The doctor creates a digitally embodied replica of the voice, and  “brings the voice to life,” and he himself plays the role of the voice. He also plays the role of psychiatrist, so he’s got a big job. Anyway, the patient directly addresses a...

Quick: Who Am I Now?

Quick: Who Am I Now?

It all happens in a flash. Our youngest turns 8 and counts the minutes until his friends arrive for backyard maniac birthday party. My eldest turns 21 and heads to Prague with his collegiate basketball team to inspire high school students to strive for an uplifted life. Then, of course, he’s taking the dozens of dollars he’ll have left to tour Germany and Austria for an extra week. (Ah, yes.  No “SendMoney” phone calls coming from that one, right?) In the middle of our home-tribe, is a beautiful and high-integrity 15 year old part-young-woman and part-little-girl who is trying figure out how she thinks about smut on instagram. Lots of parents who have a long span of years between kids’ Birth Days need to operate with a form of parental schizophrenia,...

Do we see that we each have the power to change this?

Do we see that we each have the power to change this?

Here are a few interesting dots to connect. Yesterday CNN covered loads about their own media industry. Wait, is that a circular reference? No matter. They featured a shouting panel of experts arguing whether or not we should vilify the writers of Glee who predictably leveraged the public debate of guns in schools to desperately elevate their ratings. An equal number of arguments expressed moral devastation as those expressing the show’s right to be current. Immediately following that story was a follow up to the true story about the young woman who was raped after passing out at a party, and then committed suicide after the horrendous assault was publicized on social media. I confess to seeing a connection in these two reports and their tragic realities. The...

When an invitation gets creepy

When an invitation gets creepy

I’m still piecing this story together, sparked by the industry discussion of a super bowl television commercial that ran in our nation’s largest cities.  I haven’t delved much into the details behind the church of scientology except the tabloid kind of information that I always hope is invented by wildly imaginative people. Apparently, an Oscar winning author/screenwriter/ Hollywood/Scientologist named Lawrence Wright did enough digging to find disturbing truths about this odd religion.  Wright made the serious decision to leave the Scientologists “loudly.” So he wrote a book. And his recently released expose has earned him refreshed presence in the media, particularly in coincidental light of the extraordinary investment by the Scientologists to shore...
