Living Vertically,  The Story

BLUE LIKE JAZZ

It finally came.

Like many, I followed closely as my best-friend-Don (who I’ve not yet technically met actually in real person face-to-face) struggled and amazed everyone with the whole GET IT TOLD process.  The BLJ book, the other book about the making of the movie, the funding of the movie, the almost not movie …. (inhale) and now the public response.

First of all, I’m jaded. I’ve been in marketing my whole life and since being sent by slingshot into the world of Christian publishing, media and marketing, I’ve seen the opportunity for God’s voice to be a little more, um, compelling. to a wider audience. As I toil over my scandalous  memoir and even noodle the screenplay, I hope like crazy that if He wants it told, my story will prove more emotionally disruptive to more people.  Like Don’s.

Blue Like Jazz was one of the early titles in my exploration of my own new walk of faith.  I have since given the book to a dozen people who are either heading into college or not in a faith conversation at all… because this book is so different.

My husband and nearly-14-year old daughter kindly went with me to the movie this weekend, and it is as well done as I’d hoped.  The casting and character work is 100% great – they melt our hearts.  And we are escorted through a story that honestly smashes open our own human perspective, and what we’re supposed to think.

It’s weirdly exciting to see.

After the movie, everyone was digesting. I said, “I’ve never lived a season like that in my life.  My scandal was later.”  After a pause,
marvelous husband (who’s not read the book) said to the windshield, “I did.” (!)  I resisted the urge to look back at young daughter and start rattling disclaimers. (you’ll see why when you see the movie.)

I recommend the book AND the movie, in that order. But don’t miss the movie.

Go see it in the big show so you get all it’s meant to give.

    NOT COMING TO YOUR CITY?
If you are interested in bringing Blue Like Jazz to your city, you will need to do the following:

Choose your favorite local movie theatre (no colleges, churches or dollar theatres).
Commit to purchase 1000 tickets and we can bring the film to your local theatre after opening weekend. The discounted price is usually close to the matinee price but depends on the theatre chain.
If you are willing and able to do that, please contact bluelikejazz@flypropeller.com for more information.

Guess I’ll have to get 1000 tickets!!

It would be very interersting to see if we could get a social movement going to get that film into Tuson so you could view it.

Hummmmm….will have to do some thinking about that one.
